Kicker was born in Houston, TX in March of 1977. From what his family tells him, he has been a singer and songwriter since even before he remembers. Born to a difficult marriage his parents decided to call it quits when Kicker was 2. He is the youngest of 4 siblings each with talents and abilities in their adult lives that no one expected due to their extremely difficult childhoods. Their mother has always been a survivor and taught her children to do the same so when she married a man from the Air Force with a bad temper and a need to distribute it, the children caught the brunt of it. This marriage (fortunately for the children) lasted only 10 years before it ended permanently and she became a single mother again. His mother was in the Air Force when she was medically discharged after her heart failed and so she joined the civil service (civilian military work). This position kept them on the road where Kicker would see 47 states by the time he was 20. This was both a blessing and a curse because as school goes the curriculum would constantly change, the pecking order was constantly defended (a lot of fighting with bullies), and the loss of friendships. The blessing side was when it was realized that there is no social group where he didn’t fit, even adorned with his cowboy hat and boots, and frequently the subject matter of the evening’s conversation.
Kicker says that he wishes he was born in an earlier time where art and the artists were held with greater value. He longs for the simpler life of the men who knew WHO they were and strove to be who they wanted to become. Imagining himself in Tombstone when it was ruled by corruption and it was lawlessness until a man of integrity came and saved them.
Kicker spent a portion of his teenage years as a ranch hand for 6 time all around National Finals Rodeo champion and cowboy legend Larry Mahan. He spent this time learning the ropes (literally) of ranching and cowboying with longtime best friend and boon Adam. They were a vocal duo group in the 90’s and collaborated on songs that they felt had the artistic value that would carry them to the top as singers and songwriters. As life would have it their destiny was not to be the child prodigy. Life had more experiences to deliver before this opportunity was given. These experiences would lead Kicker to be the songwriter that he is today. He writes from the heart but pulls from his experience, creativity, and zeal for lyrics and the delivery of such.
It was in 2001 when Kicker was working in a warehouse controlling 22 miles of conveyor lines when he got the news that the twin towers were hit. Immediately Kicker searched for paper on which he could flow out his emotions. There was a vast quantity of poetry spilling from his pen for days later. He was nearly published in the L.A. Times for one of his pieced titled 9-11-01 in the words that follow:
I can’t describe this feeling
This emotion is so new
America…my beauty
How could this happen to you
You stand so tall and proud.
You stand so strong and true
The ones who dare to cross you
Annihilation will come due
To you who hurt my country
God have mercy for your soul
Destruction of your cause
Becomes our only goal
To all the families shattered
By destruction through your plans
Will be avenged by liberty
We will search through all the lands
Defending lady liberty
Standing in her stead
Worry….turn…and watch your back
Because a price is on your head

This poem started the torrent that would produce a collection of works titled “The Hero’s Collection of Prayers” consisting of “A Police Officer’s Prayer”, A Paramedic’s Prayer”, A Firefighter’s Prayer”, and “A Soldier’s Prayer”. The favorite for Kicker was A Soldier’s Prayer because he has always been a patriot. His passion for the military has been a driving force in a broad spectrum of his writing so after looking at the poem A Soldier’s Prayer he sat down with his pencil and guitar. The words that he wrote as the verses just wouldn’t fit into a normal song structure so he decided to let the artist prevail and what was born that day was the song he hopes will touch your heart.

Kicker’s philosophy was that moving to Nashville would not give him the competitive edge because he blends in to the environment too well. “As much as I love that a strong community of hats and boots are in Nashville, I need to reach the ones who just don’t have a positive relationship with country music.” This philosophy took a REALLY LONG TIME to pay off but it finally did when he met his manager David Bolds. Mr. Bolds and Kicker were introduced under unusual circumstances that proved difficult but they persevered and overcame.
